Hydra-Cobra 850 sailing yacht for sale

Cobra 850 Bilge Keel

fitted out by her first owner, Ron Beckett, who purchased the moulding and strengthened the hull before completing a teak fit out. Ron is available to complete the early history of the boat if required. In 1990 HYDRA was sailed around Britain in aid of the RYA Seamanship Foundation to promote Visually Impaired sailing. I was part of the crew on that venture so know what HYDRA is capable of.

In 2000 we were looking to buy another boat and so joined Ron in joint ownership. At the time the boat had a light refit that included a Kubota 950 engine although rated at 24hp this is set up to develop 18hp at the prop, so pushes through the tides in the Menai Straits, if needed. I bought the other share in 2004

Plan and general layout

believed to be one of the last hulls moulded by Cobra Yachts. It was ordered with Chocolate topsides and a clear gel-coat hull.

The great advantage of a clear gelcoat is no unbound matting so little chance of osmosis
The mast head rig was checked in 2010 when a new backstay was fitted (threads galled on fitting) and a new LED Tri Colour fitted at the same time. The rest of the rigging was replaced in 2004 (standing and running). Inner forestay (2008)

The chocolate gel coat faded so I’ve painted her with Blakes enamel. This lasted 4 years and was repainted in 2010. I have enough paint for 2 more coats.
