The Cobra
850 was
a popular charter boat and was built in reasonably large numbers
(700 approx). There are still plenty of ex-flotilla boats to be
found in the Med.
The Cobra 850 has a five berth layout
in two cabins, with a separate heads and a dry locker. Many yachts
were home completed from kits, so the quality does vary. Fitted
with a reasonably long fin or (twin) keels and a large skeg supporting
the rudder. The 850 has good handling and a sporty performance.
The Cobra 850 was built to
comply with IOR rule, which penalised mainsail area, so most have
a 150% Genoa and a small mainsail. The rig layout can lend itself
to a touch of weather helm when hardpressed. Usually fitted with
a Bukh DV10 hp or a Yanmar 1GM. The fact that there are so many
around is testimony to the way that they were built, good eh!

'Loo-Lah'
Cobra 850
Membership Secretary (our own Gordon Brown) Owner’s home
town is Weymouth, Loo-Lah lives on a swinging mooring at Castle
Cove Sailing Club, Portland Harbour. She has a 14 bhp Volvo MD7A
(fitted 2005) and has a fin keel with skeg hung rudder. The
odd bit of history about her is that someone at Sparkes Marina,
Hayling Island has twice spotted her and is sure that his brother
crossed the Atlantic in her when she was almost new in the early
1980’s. As for racing, She managed a creditable top 400
finish in the 2004 RTIR. Charles Walker

She was factory built in 1981,original colour was red now
white. At present she is in the boatyard having a complete respray.
She was based at Newport S.C.Wales. Her name is welsh for ‘Off

from original main, but I notice the final 850 on the club page
also as that number. Owner D Wooldridge |

"Femme
Plaisir"
Cobra 850
We’ve owned Femme Plaisir for just under 2 years, she is a
bilge keel and was built in 1981, owner finished. She is fitted
with a Yanmar GM20 18hp engine. When we bought her she was lying
at Ipswich and had her transported to Whitby via road where vital
repairs were carried out over the winter months before then sailing
to her new home port of Hartlepool in the Spring of 2006. Last season
was a time of getting to know each other. This year we have been
far more adventurous and took off for a nine week cruise to Iona
just off the south west tip of Mull. We covered over 850 sea miles
and most of the time was spent sailing through poor weather, those
awful months of June and July! However I was not disappointed by
the boat’s performance and our confidence in her ability to
take a rough sea has grown. MMSI no 235054978, call sign ZNE15,
Part 1 registered 397549. Owners: Neville & Sylvia Vine
