The
Cobra 850
was a popular charter boat and
was built in reasonably large numbers (700 approx). There are still
plenty of ex-flotilla boats to be found in the Med.
The Cobra 850 has a five berth layout
in two cabins, with a separate heads and a dry locker. Many yachts
were home completed from kits, so the quality does vary. Fitted
with a reasonably long fin or (twin) keels and a large skeg supporting
the rudder. The 850 has good handling and a sporty performance.
The Cobra 850 was built to comply
with IOR rule, which penalised mainsail area, so most have a 150%
Genoa and a small mainsail. The rig layout can lend itself to a touch
of weather helm when hardpressed. Usually fitted with a Bukh DV10
hp or a Yanmar 1GM. The fact that there are so many around is testimony
to the way that they were built, good eh!
